It seems Firemath need an additional feature. In fact, inspecting the MathML standard definition at the W3C web site I couldn't find any recommendation on how to add primes. I found one example on the web at
http://dlmf.nist.gov/2/4/#SS4The solution there seems to be reasonable but I am not sure yet about the best way to incorporate that into Firemath.
In the meantime, what you can do is as follows. Add sub-superscripts to your variable. Move the cursor onto the superscript. Insert two apostrophes into the text-field and insert these as operators.
